The meaning of anonymity on AfriLeak

When the anonymity feature is engaged, other users of the platform cannot see the identity of the author. No name, handle, or profile link is displayed, and the content does not appear on the author’s public profile.

This protection does not extend to AfriLeak itself. The platform retains the technical capacity to associate anonymous content with the originating account for purposes of moderation, safety, and compliance with applicable law. Anonymity on AfriLeak is anonymity from other users — not from the operators of the service.

Operational realities

Technical measures are in place to reduce the risk of unintended disclosure. The association between an anonymous post and its author is protected by encryption, with the relevant material held separately from the primary database. Access to such information is restricted, deliberately logged, and exercised only when necessary.

Nevertheless, no technical system can eliminate all risk. Individuals who are exposing information in circumstances where identification by the platform — or by any party with the legal authority to compel the platform — would create serious personal danger should not rely solely on AfriLeak.

How people are most often identified

In practice, most individuals are not identified through technical means. They are identified by the content of what they wrote:

• Details known only to a small number of people
• Timing that correlates closely with internal events
• Photographs or media that contain contextual clues
• Distinctive patterns of language or phrasing
• Disclosure to another person

Practical precautions

• Avoid publishing from devices or networks associated with your place of work
• Use an account that is not linked to your professional identity or email
• Allow time to pass between an event and any related publication
• Remove details that only a very small group would recognise, even when those details strengthen the narrative
• Prefer description over direct photography of sensitive documents where possible
• Publish less rather than more. Additional information can be added later; information once released cannot be reliably recalled

If you believe you are at risk

You may delete your own content at any time. Deletion removes the material from the platform, though it cannot prevent copies that others may already have retained. Where you are subject to threats or harassment, use the reporting tools and blocking features available on the service.
